The 5 Foods Healthy People Never Run Out Of
Ever wondered what foods healthy people never run out of? Well, here are a few staples I always recommend my clients have in stock… it might mean a change in some shopping habits to have more fresh food in the kitchen cupboards, but the health benefits are more than worth it.
1. Eggs
Quick, versatile and packed full of goodness. One egg contains 6g of protein.
Add hard boiled eggs to salads and wraps, have a soft boiled egg for breakfast or a veg packed omelette for a quick and nutritious mid-week dinner.
2. Bananas
The year-round super food, stacked high with potassium, magnesium and dietary fiber. They also contain natural prebiotics that encourage the growth of healthy gut bacteria.
3. Fresh herbs and spices
Having a display of fresh herbs and spices on your kitchen counter does more than make the room look and smell nice! Herbs can be added to most dishes for an extra boost of antioxidants, and spices have numerous health benefits, ranging from soothing stomach pains (ginger), stabilising blood sugar (cinnamon) to lifting your mood (saffron).
Of course, the dried variety is always a good backup too.
Add ground cinnamon to breakfast oats, fresh ginger to smoothies, or try a turmeric latte instead of your usual coffee for a nice change.
4. Canned fish
Go for low sodium tuna or salmon in spring water (avoid the ones soaked in brine or oil) and add to salads or wraps for a tasty protein boost. It’s also packed with omega 3 fatty acids.
5. Fresh fruit
This should be an obvious one but having a good variety of fresh fruit washed and chopped in the fridge can be a real lifesaver when hunger strikes. There isn’t really any good or bad fruit but be aware of the natural sugar content in all fruits and steer towards berries that are full of antioxidants (goji berries, blueberries and acai berries offer the best nutrition).
